Colne F.C. 0 - 1 Workington AFC

Colne lost out to a single goal scored from the penalty spot in a close fought end-to-end game against Workington on Tuesday night. The Reds battled hard against a good team and deserved a draw at the end of the day.

In the opening stages, both sides pushed forward and Bradley Carroll’s inviting low cross was cleared from the Reds' goalmouth by Billy Hasler-Cregg. As play switched to the other end, Spencer Jordan set up Jamie Cooke for an angled drive that was deflected past the far post by a defender’s glancing header in the goalmouth.

As Workington enjoyed a period of attacking play, Robert Bowman saw his firmly struck angled shot pushed away by Hakan Burton in the Colne goal. Burton was in action again minutes later when he tipped a free kick by Liam Brockbank around the post with a diving save.

The Reds came close after 27 minutes when Hasler-Cregg released Reece Webb-Foster down the left wing, who cut inside before seeing his shot blocked at the near post for a Colne corner. The Reds were quick to turn defence into attack with long balls forward by Burton and after 37 minutes Workington keeper, James Atkinson, received a yellow card when he handled the ball outside his area to cut out a Colne attack. But the resulting free kick was fired just over the crossbar and the sides reached half time with a blank scoreline.

As the second half began, Colne built some promising attacks with Webb-Foster and Hasler-Cregg linking well on the left and Waqas Azam finding space on the right wing. But Workington got back to defend in numbers and restrict the Reds to only a few clear sights of goal.

On the hour, the deadlock was broken when Reuben Jerome made a run into the Colne area and was brought down from behind. giving Workington a certain penalty. Scott Allison fired home the spot kick to give his side the lead.

Colne worked hard looking for an equaliser and built more good attacks with Hasler-Cregg and Mamadou Djabi linking well up front as Alex Dodd prompted from midfield. But Dodd’s through ball was just too strong for Alex Samizadeh as he broke on the left wing.

In the closing stages, Tom Dean joined the attack and won the ball in the air repeatedly to create openings for his team-mates. But when Hasler-Cregg’s diagonal free kick fell to him at the far post, Dean saw his shot fly just wide of goal. With the game in injury time, Samizadeh made a great run into the visitors' penalty area, but was stopped by a last ditch tackle by Daniel Wordsworth when an equaliser looked on the cards. Colne were denied what looked a clear penalty when the ball struck a defender’s hand in a series of crosses into the Workington penalty area.

As time ran out for the Reds, they were forced to concede their first league defeat of the season despite a never say die performance.
