Match Review | Mossley 0-1 Colne F.C.

November 18, 2019

Colne earned three valuable league points with a hard fought win over Mossley at Seel Park on Saturday.  The Reds battled hard throughout the game and scored the winner through Will Harris with ten minutes left.

Colne made a bright start with some promising attacking moves but were soon on the defensive as ex-Red Brad Lynch cut in from the left wing and saw his well struck shot pushed round the post by Hakan Burton in the Reds goal after nine minutes.  And four minutes later, Mossley had loud claims for a penalty waved aside when Jesurun Uchegbulam went down in the Colne area under a strong challenge.

The Reds worked hard and had a sight of goal after 24 minutes when Connor Hughes flashed a 25 yard free kick just past the post.  And as Colne continued to press, they forced a series of corners with Sefton Gonzales finding room in the home penalty area.  After 31 minutes, Hughes’ through ball sent Harris into the area but his angled shot flew just wide of the near post.

With the scoresheet blank at half time, the Reds pushed forward with some good build-ups in the second half and Max Hazeldine’s penetrating runs repeatedly unsettled the home defence.  But in the end-to-end play, Mossley threatened on the break and Matty Makinson and Andy Hollins made vital clearances from the Colne penalty area before Lynch shot high over the bar from a good chance on the hour.

After 68 minutes Colne had a penalty appeal turned down when Hazeldine went down over the Mossley keeper’s despairing dive in the home area.  But three minutes later, the Reds had a let-off at the other end when Gary Gee fired over the top of the Colne goal when the ball fell to him unmarked in the goalmouth.

After 78 minutes, a good build-up sent Aidan Chippendale away on the left wing and he cut inside before seeing his well struck shot blocked at the near post in a good save by the keeper.  Two minutes later, Colne did well to clear a Mossley attack and a long ball up the field found Billy Hasler-Cregg whose through ball sent Harris into the home area and he beat the keeper at the near post from close range to put Colne in front.

Mossley pressed strongly in the closing minutes but the Reds held on firmly to clinch the points and begin their climb up the table.
