Glossop North End F.C. 3 - 2 Colne F.C.

A late come-back by Colne was not enough to save them from defeat at Glossop on Saturday. Despite a brace of goals by Reece Webb-Foster in the closing stages, the damage had been done after they had gifted the home side three goals earlier in the game.

The Reds started brightly and looked the better side in the opening stages when they forced Glossop into some desperate defending. Dean Ing’s shot was blocked in the goalmouth after a good build-up on seven minutes and Charlie Russell and Webb-Foster fired shots just off target in a series of promising attacks.

But after 17 minutes Glossop took the lead with their first real attack of the game when Nathan Whalley cut in from the right wing past defenders and his cross was headed home by the unmarked Jamie Rainford in front of goal.

Colne looked for a quick reply with some good crosses into the Glossop penalty area but failed to convert them and at the other end, Glossop took advantage of a defensive lapse when new signing Prince Haywood was caught in possession by Keaton Mulvey who scored with a low shot into the bottom corner of the net to double the home side’s lead after 25 minutes.

Colne pushed forward again with more crosses and shots into the home penalty area but Glossop soaked up the pressure to maintain their lead at half time.

The Reds set about reducing the deficit in the second half and felt they should have had a penalty on the hour when Ing’s header appeared to be handled by a defender on the goal-line but the referee waved away their appeals. And the Glossop defence continued to scramble away a series of half chances.

After 71 minutes, Colne’s plight got worse when keeper Hakan Burton mis-kicked a clearance outside his area and Rainford took full advantage to run on to the loose ball and fire it home for a third goal for Glossop.

The Reds continued to push forward with some good build-ups and dangerous crosses and after 87 minutes Russell’s shot into a crowded penalty area was blocked on the line by the hand of defender Ekow Coker earning him a red card and resulting in a penalty for Colne. Webb-Foster blasted home the spot kick to reduce the arrears to 3-1.

Wave after wave of attacks by the Reds had Glossop on the rack and six minutes into injury time Billy Hasler-Cregg’s cross was met on the volley by Webb-Foster to send the ball like a rocket into the top corner of the net. But time ran out for Colne as the final whistle brought an end to their brave fightback.
