Colne F.C. 0 - 2 Bootle F.C.

Colne slipped to defeat in a close fought game against Bootle on Saturday. The Reds fielded a reshuffled team due to injuries and struggled to find their form through much of the game.

Colne made a bright start with Billy Hasler-Cregg getting through the visitors defence with a dazzling run to win a corner. And from the resulting cross, Charlie Russell saw his close range header deflected over the bar off the head of a defender on the line.

But the Reds were rocked after six minutes, when an innocuous looking free kick from the halfway line fell to Ben Hodkinson who had got behind the Colne defence and he scored easily with a shot into the bottom corner of the net to give Bootle the lead.

Colne had the chance to level just two minutes later when Hasler-Cregg’s cross gave Russell a sight of goal and his shot beat the keeper but bounced to safety off the top of the crossbar.

On 15 minutes, Joel Torrance in the Colne goal made an outstanding save when he turned a dipping 25 yard shot from Hodkinson over his goal. And Torrance was in action again ten minutes later when he made a good save to block an angled shot by Michael Carberry at his near post.

With half time approaching, Reece Webb-Foster was pulled down on his run through the middle of the Bootle defence and from the resulting free kick he curled a shot just over the bar. As Colne continued to attack, Oli Roberts saw his shot blocked in the penalty area following a good run by Hasler-Cregg on the left wing. And as the Reds kept up the pressure Matthew Hamilton headed a cross over the bar of his own goal to foil another good attack.

As the second half began, Bootle forced a corner on the right wing and the resulting high cross to the near post finished in the back of the net as the ball slipped from the keeper’s hands to give the visitors a two goal lead.

Colne looked for a quick reply and both Hasler-Cregg and Webb-Foster made promising runs into the Bootle penalty area but were denied by visiting keeper Ryan Jones. While at the other end, an angled shot by Bootle striker Jack McGowan rolled inches past the far post of the Colne goal.

Colne’s subs brought fresh legs to the side and the Reds pushed forward in the closing stages. A long corner kick on 85 minutes found the head of Paul Dugdale at the far post and his powerful header was cleared off the line by a defender to deny Colne a consolation goal.
