Colne overcame Premier Division opposition in the Buildbase FA Trophy when they disposed of high flying Buxton with a great second half comeback at the Silverlands Stadium on Saturday. The home side were on an unbeaten run of twenty games but the Reds snatched a famous victory despite being down to ten men and without a recognised keeper for the whole of the second period of the game.
Both sides tested each other out in the opening stages and Colne keeper Joel Torrance was well positioned to take a close range header by Nathan Fox in an early Buxton attack. And after 14 minutes, Torrance made a great save to keep out a shot by Warren Clarke after Ash Chambers had seen his shot blocked in the Colne penalty area.
The Reds settled into the game with Olatunde Bayode making promising runs on the left and Billy Hasler-Cregg on the right. But Buxton controlled the midfield with some good possession play and Ryan Taylor and Tom Dean needed to make good clearances from the Colne penalty area from high crosses.
The Reds looked comfortable with half time approaching but a back pass from a throw in on the half way line put Torrance in trouble and he brought Chambers down as the Buxton man went past him. Fortunately the foul was outside the area but nevertheless Torrance was sent off as the last man.
Taylor took over in goal and five minutes later on the stroke of half time Buxton took the lead when Colne’s close passing in their own half gave a chance to the home side and Ben Milnes’ through ball sent Chambers through to score from close range.
Colne’s chances looked bleak as the second half began but the pattern was set after just three minutes when Chambers shot was saved by Taylor at his near post and from the corner Dean headed the cross clear. Taylor’s save was the first of many both with his feet and his hands as Buxton peppered the Colne goal and he kept out a series of direct shots and dangerous crosses when a goal seemed inevitable.
Colne’s sporadic attacks produced a corner after 73 minutes and Oli Roberts’ curling cross was headed back into the goalmouth by Dean from beyond the far post for Lee Pugh to head home on the goal-line and level the scores at 1-1.
As Buxton looked for a quick reply, Taylor again looked unbeatable at the other end as he knocked away a free kick from his goalmouth. But on 77 minutes, the Reds forced another corner and again Roberts’ curling cross found Dean’s head at the far post for a powerful header into the net to give Colne the lead at 2-1.
Buxton pressed forward in the closing stages but Taylor continued to frustrate the home side with yet more unbelievable saves as Colne ran out worthy winners in a game that will live in the memory for a long time.
