Colne let three points slip away at City of Liverpool on Tuesday night despite outplaying the home side for long periods of the game. The Reds failed to add goals to their superior midfield play and paid the ultimate price conceding a scrappy goal in the seventieth minute to deny them any reward from the game.
Colne included new loan signing from Rochdale 18 year old Lewis Bradley in the side and he made an impressive debut linking well with his new team-mates. The Reds soon settled into the game and after ten minutes, Marcus Poscha headed a chance just over the bar from Waqas Azam’s corner. Colne dominated the midfield with some great inter-passing and possession and a period of pressure after 20 minutes saw Connor Hughes head just over the bar of the home goal.
The Reds had Liverpool chasing shadows with some of their build-ups but on the half hour Bradley saw his shot blocked in the penalty area after an outstanding move. And Eli Hey headed wide from another goal scoring opportunity just before half time.
As the second half began, Liverpool adopted a more aggressive approach with long balls to unsettle the Reds defence. But it was Colne who almost took the lead after 51 minutes when Bradley’s diagonal shot flew inches wide of the far post with the keeper beaten. And on the hour, Bradley’s low cross from the bye line was well held by Liverpool’s keeper Owen Wheeler low down in his goalmouth.
But Liverpool began to look more dangerous and Poscha did well to get back and block the shot of Lewis Gilboy in the Colne penalty area after the Liverpool winger had broken clear on a long through ball after 68 minutes. As Liverpool forced a series of corners, Hakan Burton made a point blank save to keep out Tony Brown’s close range header. But as the pressure continued, another inswinging corner had the Reds defence in trouble and Burton failed to punch the ball clear from his crowded goalmouth before it finished in the far corner of the net to give Liverpool the lead.
Colne pushed forward looking for an equaliser and as a good move sent Hey into the home penalty area, he avoided a lunging challenge by a defender but lifted the ball over the bar from an angle. In the dying minutes of the game, Colne worked the ball from a Lee Pugh throw on the right wing across the edge of the penalty are to Billy Hasler-Cregg on the left and his well struck shot brought an instinctive save from Wheeler to clutch the ball under the crossbar and deny the Reds what would have been a deserved equaliser.
Nevertheless Colne need to start scoring goals if they are to lift themselves up the table. In a game that should have been won by half time they slid to defeat and finished pointless.
