Reds on the Rise Again
By Dave Priestley
Colne moved into the play-off places with a derby day win on Easter Monday against local rivals Clitheroe.
The Reds put the disappointing defeat at Widnes behind them and benefitted from results elsewhere to move up to fifth place in the table with just one game to play.
Colne made a bright start to the game with Alex Curran prompting some good attacking moves and Oliver Wood finding room up front to try some speculative efforts. Waqas Azam made good runs to open up the Clitheroe defence and had a good shot blocked in the Blues penalty area after 12 minutes.
Colne took the lead after 15 minutes when Brad Knox took the ball forward and found Brad Lynch to the left of goal and his low cross was knocked home by Mamadou Djabi from close range.
Clitheroe came more into the game and on the half hour a good break by Bevan Burey up the right wing gave Max Hazeldine a sight of goal but Hakan Burton got down well to hold his shot in the goalmouth. Five minutes before half time, the Blues came even closer when Hazeldine broke clear of the Reds defence and saw his shot come back off the Colne crossbar.
Clitheroe continued to threaten in the second half and Burton did well to tackle Hazeldine in the Colne goalmouth to clear the danger from a Blues corner. But at the other end Clitheroe keeper Ben Purdham kept out Lynch’s shot with his feet after Djabi and Wood had opened up the Blues defence.
On the hour, Richie Baker’s diagonal free kick reached Billy Priestley and his looping header dropped into the far corner of the net to double Colne’s lead.
The Reds looked to stretch their lead further with a series of corners and free kicks but Clitheroe looked dangerous on the break and in the closing stages Cole Lonsdale flashed a shot across the Colne goalmouth.
With the final whistle approaching, Colne put pressure on the Clitheroe defence and a back pass to the keeper was half cleared to Wood just outside the area who found the bottom corner of the net with a well placed shot to round off the scoring at 3-0.
