Colne Make the Play Offs

Colne secured a place in the play-offs with a hard earned point against Droylsden.

The Reds might have taken an early lead on six minutes when Adam Morning was clean through on goal but Droylsden keeper James Coates saved his shot with his feet to deny him.

Colne might have regretted the missed chance as Droylsden looked dangerous on the attack in a tight game. Domaine Rouse was a constant threat and had shots blocked in the Colne penalty area by a hard working Reds defence. And Colne were relieved to scramble the ball away from their goalmouth following a corner after 25 minutes.

But the Reds looked for a goal at the other end with Jason Hart and Phil Dean creating chances and Mark Ayres flashing a header just wide of the visitors’ goal from a corner.

With half time approaching Jack Lynch made a vital tackle to stop Liam Caddick’s run into the home penalty area before Lee Pugh did well to block Luke Daly’s close range shot at the expense of a corner.

Early in the second half Colne thought they had made the breakthrough when Morning’s shot was blocked by Coates and Spencer Jordan followed up to fire home the rebound but the celebrations were cut short when the goal was ruled out by an offside flag.

In the end to end action both sides threatened to open the scoring and Morning’s shot flew inches over the visitors’ crossbar before Simon Nangle came close with a well driven freekick.

Droylsden almost punished the Reds after 72 minutes when Ciaran Kilheeney sent a header flying toward the top corner of goal but Colne keeper Greg Hartley made a great one handed save to keep the ball out of the net.

There was no let up in the closing stages as Colne looked for a winner that would ensure a good position in the play-offs but had to defend well to avoid conceding a goal which might rule them out altogether.

Ultimately the draw saw the Reds finish in fifth place and will travel to play second placed Farsley Celtic in the semi final of the play-offs on Tuesday evening. The winners of that game will play Scarborough Athletic or Ossett Town next Saturday.
